How to schedule Threads posts, and the limits to check first
Meta's Threads app now works with Wahlu. Here are the limits Meta sets on posts sent through its API, and how to schedule text, photo, video and carousel posts, step by step.

Scheduling Threads posts lets you write when you have time and publish when your followers are around. If Threads is one of several accounts you post to, a scheduler also keeps it in the same plan as everything else, so a launch or an offer lands everywhere in the same week.
This guide is about Meta's Threads app. (If you're after a chain of posts on X or Bluesky, see how to post threads on X and Bluesky.) It covers when a scheduler is worth it, the limits Meta sets, and how to schedule Threads posts in Wahlu. Wahlu publishes through Meta's official Threads API, so the limits below come from Meta's own documentation, checked on 14 October 2026.
Do you need a scheduler for Threads?
If you only post to Threads now and then, you probably don't. Write the post in the Threads app and publish it when it's ready.
A scheduler earns its place when one of these is true:
- You post to more than Threads. If the same idea also goes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or TikTok, one calendar beats juggling apps.
- You batch your writing. A week of posts written in one sitting is easier to manage when you can see them laid out and move them around.
- You write longer ideas. A tip that needs three or four posts can be scheduled as one chain, with every part going out in order.
The Threads limits to check before you schedule
A post that breaks a rule is refused when it's published, not when you write it. These are the limits Meta applies to posts sent through the Threads API:
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Text | Up to 500 characters |
| Links | Up to 5 per post |
| Topic tag | One per post, 1 to 50 characters, no full stops or ampersands |
| Photos | JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB |
| Videos | MP4 or MOV, up to 5 minutes and 1 GB |
| Carousels | 2 to 20 photos and videos, mixed |
| Posts through the API | 250 per profile in any 24 hours |
| Replies through the API | 1,000 per profile in any 24 hours |
The photo, video and rate limits are on Meta's Threads API overview. Three of these catch people out.
Emoji use more of the limit than you'd expect
Meta counts each emoji as its number of UTF-8 bytes, not as one character. Most emoji are 4 bytes, so a post full of emoji reaches 500 sooner than it looks. Wahlu's counter measures Threads text the same way, so a post that fits in Wahlu fits on Threads.
Hashtags work differently
Threads uses one topic tag per post rather than a string of hashtags. Meta still reads a # tag typed in the text, but it prefers the topic tag field. In Wahlu, you add the topic tag in Threads options, without the #.
Too many links fail the post
Since December 2025, Meta refuses a post with more than 5 links. Wahlu flags it before you schedule.
How to schedule Threads posts in Wahlu
1. Connect your Threads profile
Open your brand, click Accounts, then More platforms, and connect Threads. Sign in to the Threads profile you want to post from and allow what it asks for. Threads connects whichever profile you're signed in to, so check that first if you have more than one.
2. Write the post
Click New post and pick your Threads profile. Write your text and add photos or a video if you like. Wahlu picks the kind of post from what you add:
- No media makes a text post.
- One photo or one video makes a photo or video post.
- Two to twenty photos and videos make a carousel.
You can give Threads its own caption if your Instagram caption is too long for it.
3. Set the Threads options
Open Threads options in the post editor. All of these are optional:
- Who can reply: anyone, your followers, profiles you follow or mentioned profiles only.
- Topic tag: one subject for the post.
- Add to thread: up to 9 more text parts. Each one goes out as a reply to the one before.
- Follow-up reply: one reply posted right after your post goes live. It's a good place for a link, so the main post stays clean.
4. Post now or schedule
Pick Post now, or choose a date and time. The calendar shows everything going out across your accounts, so you can spot gaps and move posts around.
Threads processes photos and videos before they can go live. Wahlu waits until Threads says they're ready, then publishes, so a large video may go out a little after its scheduled minute.
5. See how it did
On paid plans, Insights shows your Threads followers and views over the last 28 days, then views, likes, replies, reposts and quotes for your latest posts from Wahlu.
Why a scheduled Threads post might not go out
Wahlu checks the text, links and media before you schedule, but a few things can still stop a post:
- Wahlu has lost access. If you removed Wahlu in your Threads settings, reconnect the profile and post again.
- Threads couldn't process the video. Re-export it as an MP4 within the limits above.
- The daily limit. Meta allows 250 posts through its API per profile in any 24 hours.
If an extra part or the follow-up reply fails, your main post stays live and History shows which part didn't go out. The full list is in Post to Threads.
Questions about scheduling Threads posts
Can I schedule the same post to Threads and Instagram?
Yes. Pick both accounts in one post and give each its own caption where you need to. Instagram captions can be far longer than 500 characters, so shorten the Threads version if you reuse a long one.
Can I schedule a carousel on Threads?
Yes. A Threads carousel takes 2 to 20 photos and videos, in any mix, and counts as one post.
Can Autopilot or an AI agent post to Threads?
Not yet. For now you schedule Threads posts yourself in the Wahlu app. Autopilot and connected agents post to your other accounts.
Does scheduling a Threads post hurt its reach?
Meta hasn't said that posts sent through its API reach fewer people. What matters more is whether the post is useful to the people who see it, and whether you're around to reply once it's live.
