How Bluesky counts characters
A Bluesky post holds 300 characters. Bluesky's developer docs say exactly what that means: 300 grapheme clusters. A grapheme is one character as you see it on screen, even when it is built from several hidden parts.
This counter uses the same counting code as Wahlu's scheduler and post editor, so a post that fits here fits when Wahlu sends it.
- Letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation count as 1 each.
- Each emoji counts as 1, including flags, skin tones and family emoji made of several parts.
- A letter with an accent counts as 1, and so does each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character.
- A link that starts with https:// is shown shortened, and the shortened form is what counts.
- Hashtags and @ mentions count like any other text. A line break counts as 1.
Links are shortened, not fixed
Bluesky doesn't give every link a set length the way X does. The Bluesky app shows a long link as the site name and the start of its path, then three dots, and that shorter text is what counts. The full address still opens when someone taps it.
Take “New menu is live ☕ https://example.com/menus/autumn-2026”. You can see 56 characters. Bluesky counts 46: 19 for the words, spaces and emoji, and 27 for the link, which shows as “example.com/menus/autumn...”.
A link typed without https://, such as wahlu.com/pricing, still becomes clickable, but it counts at the length you typed it.
Images and video on Bluesky
A post can carry up to four images or one video. Through Wahlu, images can be JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB each. Wahlu makes a big image smaller to fit Bluesky before it uploads it. Add alt text to each image so people using screen readers know what it shows.
A video can be MP4 or MOV, up to 100 MB and 3 minutes. Bluesky only lets an account post video once its email address is verified. Add a file above and the counter checks its type, size and length.
In a text post, the first link becomes a link card with the page's title and picture. The card itself doesn't use any of your 300 characters.
