How X counts characters
A standard X post holds 280 characters, but X doesn't count them one by one. It gives some characters more weight than others, so a post that looks short can still be over the limit.
This counter uses the same counting code as Wahlu's scheduler, which follows X's published rules.
- Letters, numbers, spaces and common punctuation count as 1 each.
- Every link counts as 23, whether it is 12 characters long or 200.
- Each emoji counts as 2, including flags and family emoji made of several parts.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2 each.
- Hashtags and @ mentions count like any other text. A line break counts as 1.
A worked example
Take “New menu is live ☕ https://example.com/menus/autumn-2026”. You can see 56 characters. X counts 43: 18 for the words and spaces, 2 for the emoji and 23 for the link.
The link rule works both ways. A very short link still costs 23, so a link shortener won't save you any room.
Images and video on X
A post can carry up to four images, or one GIF, or one video. Through Wahlu, images can be JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF up to 5 MB each, and a video can be MP4 or MOV up to 512 MB. Add a file above and the counter checks its type, size and shape.

No. The text and any file you add are checked in your browser and are not uploaded or saved. Browsers can read a file's type, size, dimensions and length, but not its video codec or frame rate, so the checker lists those for you to confirm.
Yes, for a standard post. X Premium accounts can write longer posts on X itself. This counter, and Wahlu's scheduler, check the standard 280 limit.
Yes. X wraps every link and counts it as 23 characters, whatever its real length. A link written without https:// usually counts as 23 too.
